Focus Education and its cutting edge ifocus system featuring the Jungle Rangers game is a labor of love for co-founders John Able and Michael Apstein.
John has six children and four grandchildren. Michael has five children and three grandchildren. Both successful businessmen, the most important role they will both tell you they’ve had in life is “Dad.” So helping kids reach their greatest potential is a job they were very familiar with.
For that reason, when John and Michael partnered to launch a new business, there was one thing they knew for sure – they wanted to find a way to help kids succeed, whether they could use a little help, all the way through the high achiever. That passion became the mission of Focus Education: leveraging technology to help kids reach their greatest potential.
Driven by their mission, John and Michael spent 2 years on research and reflection. As fathers themselves, with children now grown, they sought out the fundamental building blocks that helped kids succeed in school and in life. They landed on the need to shore up children’s ability to focus, retain and recall information. If kids are able to focus, they are able to master almost any skill.
In late 2009 that road led to Dr. Kimberly Kerns, a highly respected pediatric neuropsychologist at the University of Victoria. Dr. Kerns’ had been working for years on children’s attention issues, her area of specialty, and had recently landed upon the idea of developing a computer game to bring the cognitive exercises she knew could be effective into an environment children would enjoy. John and Michael studied her work and quickly realized that the clinical tools Dr. Kerns had spent years developing and testing could be used to create a product to help children improve their focus, attention, and memory.
Focus Education championed the game concept, but it turned out to be a difficult task to turn cognitive exercises into a fun computer game. John and Michael were committed to bringing the best to families – the product had to leverage proven science, while at the same time being engaging to kids. They knew from experience that what parents needed was a tool that really worked. Which led to experts Dr. Roxana Vernescu, Dr. Michael Wendt, and LD/RD Elizabeth Strickland being brought in to oversee the development of pieces of the ifocus system to address behavior, nutrition, and exercise. Three years later the ifocus system was born – with the Jungle Rangers computer game as its centerpiece.
With an engaging story line and endearing characters, kids love to play it… and it works. It’s now been tested on children with phenomenal results, and is in thousands of homes across the country, changing kid’s lives.
